AUS Tamil TV Community Awards 2025 Award Winner

Born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Mr. Senthooran Perampalam has dedicated over 35 years to serving the Victorian Tamil community with humility and passion. Since moving to Australia, he became actively involved in the Sri Lankan Tamil community, serving as President of the Ceylon Tamil Association for two years and as a long-time committee member. He was instrumental in introducing Tamil as a VCE subject in Victoria and played a key role in building Melbourne’s first Hindu temple. Deeply committed to humanitarian work, he supported the people of Tamil Eelam during the war-torn years and later served as Chairperson of the Consortium of Tamil Organisations. Currently a Director at the Community Radio Federation, he continues to inspire through his lifelong service and leadership.

Mr. Senthooran Perambalam  – Lifetime Achievement Award

Born in Jaffna Srilanka and Graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of CeylonPeradeniya. Left Srilanka soon after and worked in Zambia and Botswana before migrating to Melbourne in 1985. Always interested in serving the community he lives joined the Lions Club in Francistown Botswana rising to serve as Zone Secretary for the Southern African region.

Since moving to Australia got involved in the Srilankan Tamil Community serving as President of then Ceylon Tamil Association for two years and a number of years in the committee and was instrumental in getting the Tamil Language as a subject for the VCE exam in Victoria. I am also a founder member of the Melbourne Vinayagar Hindu Sangam serving as Secretary Treasurer and President and has been instrumental in building the first Hindu Temple in Melbourne which was consecrated in 1989. Also got heavily involved in helping the people in Tamil Eelam during the war torn years and served as Chairperson of the Consortium of Tamil Organisation which is the umbrella organisation cordinating different organisations within the tamil community in Victoria.

He is also a director at the Community Radio Federation which broadcasts in over fifty different languages in Victoria including Tamil Language.

A pillar of the Tamil community in Melbourne, Mr. Sivakumar Karunanithi has devoted decades to preserving Tamil culture, language, and unity. As a founding member of Melbourne Muthamizh Mandram (MMM) and a leader in organisations like the Tamil Consortium of Victoria, he has driven landmark initiatives such as the Thiruvalluvar Statue Project and Tamil Festival Australia. His compassion and commitment extend to numerous humanitarian causes, from education support to flood relief. Through his humility, leadership, and service, he continues to inspire collaboration and pride within the Tamil diaspora.

The Melbourne Association of Tamil Students (MATS) was founded in 2021 to serve as a unifying platform for Tamil youth across Melbourne, fostering pride in Tamil heritage while promoting our culture and leadership. Established to support and represent Tamil students and the Tamil community, MATS organises a wide range of events; from cultural balls, partying events, trivia nights and many charity initiatives that strengthen community ties and celebrate the richness of Tamil identity.

A gifted musician and composer, V. M. Karthik Kumar has been a passionate ambassador of Tamil music since childhood. Inspired by the legendary S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, he has performed across Australia, bringing Tamil melodies to diverse audiences. In India, his compositions for independent films like அனல் (Heat) addressed vital social themes such as drug awareness among youth. In Melbourne, he continues to mentor emerging artists and strengthen the Tamil music community through his artistry and dedication.

Mr. V M Karthik Kumar – Special Jury Award for Limitless Inspiration Award

Karthik, a recent migrant to Australia, has been deeply passionate about music since childhood. Inspired by the legendary S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, he continues to celebrate Tamil film music through his soulful performances that captivate audiences across Australia.

In India, Karthik composed music and provided sound design for several independent films, including அனல் (Heat), a project aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse among Tamil youth.

In Australia, he has become an active contributor to the Tamil musical scene, performing in both professional and community-based events — including the recent Melbourne concert of music director Deva. Beyond the stage, Karthik takes pride in mentoring and encouraging young talents, fostering a vibrant and inclusive musical community. His journey reflects not just artistic excellence, but a heartfelt commitment to sharing the joy of music with others.

With nearly two decades of dedicated service, Yasotha Kumarasamy has been a driving force in promoting Tamil language, culture, and education across Victoria. As a long-standing teacher with the Victorian Tamil Association and a Board Examiner for the Australian Society of Graduate Tamils, she has mentored countless students and nurtured cultural pride among Tamil youth.

Her leadership in pioneering The Tamil Competition has inspired young Australians, earning her the Outstanding Contribution to the Victorian Community Award from AUS Tamil TV.

Yasotha Kumarasamy – Outstanding Contribution To VIC Community

Yasotha Kumarasamy began her teaching career in Sri Lanka at a young age and continued her profession in Victoria, Australia. She has been a tireless leader in preserving and promoting Tamil language and culture, making a lasting impact on the community. Since 2005, Yasotha has played a pivotal role in the Australian Society of Graduate Tamils Inc., pioneering The Tamil Competition to inspire pride, engagement, and excellence among young Australians of Tamil heritage.

As a national Board Examiner for ASOGT and a long-standing Tamil language teacher with the Victorian Tamil Association, she has mentored students of all abilities, guided VCE Tamil candidates, and supported learners beyond the classroom. Her dedication and vision have strengthened Tamil cultural identity and enriched Australia’s multicultural landscape, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to come.

A pioneer in Tamil education, Mr. Sivashambu Subramaniam has dedicated over three decades to teaching and developing Tamil language learning in Sri Lanka and Australia. Since migrating in 1996, he has been instrumental in shaping the VCE Tamil curriculum and mentoring students through the VTA Tamil School. His Tamil textbooks are widely used by the global Tamil diaspora, supporting language education worldwide. Through his lifelong service, he has strengthened both Tamil education and multicultural harmony.

Mr. Sivashambu Subramaniam – Linguistics Award (Male) Award

Mr. Sivashambu Subramaniam has dedicated over thirty years to advancing Tamil education and community development in Sri Lanka and Australia. After migrating to Australia, he helped establish some of Victoria’s first Tamil schools and contributed to the VCE LOTE Tamil curriculum. Holding a Bachelor of Education from the University of Colombo, an Advanced Diploma in Interpreting, and other Australian qualifications such as the social work profession, he has taught and mentored across cultures. He has produced widely used Tamil textbooks, organised cultural programs, and represented Australia in international Tamil education initiatives. Through lifelong service in teaching, interpreting, and community engagement, he has strengthened Tamil language education and multicultural understanding globally.

For over thirty years, Mr Sivashambu has worked tirelessly to advance Tamil education and community development in both Sri Lanka and Australia. As a senior teacher, linguist, interpreter, and cultural advocate, he has devoted his life to ensuring the Tamil language and its rich heritage continue to flourish for future generations.

After migrating to Australia, Mr Sivashambu became one of the pioneers of Tamil education in Victoria. Through a collaborative effort, some of the first Tamil schools were established, giving migrant and Australian born children, the opportunity to learn their native tongue and connect with their cultural roots. His contribution to multicultural education was recognised when the City of Whittlesea honoured him with the Australia Day Achievement Award in 2004.

Over the past three decades, he has played a key role in developing Tamil as an academic subject in Victoria. As a consultant for the VCE LOTE Tamil program, part of the Victorian Certificate of Education (the state’s higher school certificate) Languages Other Than English curriculum, he helped design the syllabus and curriculum, and contributed valuable resource materials, ensuring the Tamil language received the same academic recognition as other major languages.

Mr. Sivashambu holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Colombo, along with several Australian qualifications, including TESOL certification, Advance Diploma of Interpreting, Certificate IV in Community Language Teaching, and a Diploma of Community Services. His qualifications and experience have helped him teach effectively across cultures and communities.

Beyond the classroom, he has contributed to Tamil education worldwide by producing textbooks and learning materials for Tamil-speaking children living outside their homeland. Since 2002, these resources have been widely used in Tamil schools across Europe, North America, and Australia. He has also organised cultural festivals, debating and poetry competitions, and Tamil arts programs that give young people opportunities to express their creativity and deepen their connection to Tamil culture.

His innovative approach to teaching blends traditional and modern methods. Representing Australia at an international seminar in Germany organised by the World Tamil Federation (America), he contributed to the design of standardised Tamil textbooks for global use — helping to shape the next generation of Tamil learners around the world.

A strong believer in community service, Mr. Sivashambu has volunteered extensively in education and welfare programs for new migrants. Through the Whittlesea Council and Preston TAFE, he has tutored English and Mathematics to help newly arrived families settle successfully in Australia. For over twelve years, he has also served as a Tamil–English interpreter in law, health, and education sectors, bridging communication gaps and supporting multicultural understanding.

His continued involvement with organisations such as the Victoria Tamil Association and the Australian Tamil Literary and Arts Society reflects his lifelong dedication to education and cultural development. Recently, he has taken on the management of a Tamil school under the Victoria Tamil Association, continuing his mission to strengthen language learning and community engagement.

Through his vision, innovation, and lifelong service, Mr. Sivashambu has elevated the place of Tamil language education in Australia and inspired countless students and teachers around the world. His legacy of dedication and leadership makes him a truly deserving recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Born in India and based in Melbourne, Himathri Ramachandran Bhanumathi is a passionate Tamil educator at VTA Wyndham Tamil School, where she has taught for over eight years. An IT Product Manager in the Victorian Public Service, she also contributes as a podcaster, WynFM Vaanisai Radio volunteer, and community MC. A recipient of the Tamil Kalvi Sudaroli Award and trained in Applied Linguistics by S. Rajaratnam’s Talent Academy (Canada), Hima continues to champion the Tamil language and culture across generations and continents.

Himathri Ramachandran Bhanumathi – Linguistics Award (Female)

Born in India to parents from non-Tamil speaking states (Andhra and Kerala), Himathri Ramachandran Bhanumathi grew up immersed in the vibrant Tamil culture of Chennai, TamilNadu, developing a lifelong love for the language and its heritage. Now based in Melbourne with her supportive husband and two beautiful daughters, she brings together her global experiences from living across a few countries such as India, the USA, Singapore and happily settled in Melbourne, Australia to nurture a strong Tamil identity within the Australian Tamil community.

A qualified IT professional with a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master’s in IT and Management, Hima has built a successful full time career as an IT Product Manager. Alongside her professional achievements, she has passionately dedicated herself to promoting the Tamil language and culture. For the past eight years, she has been an inspiring Tamil teacher at the Victoria Tamil Association (VTA) Wyndham campus, where she creates engaging learning experiences that connect young learners to the cultural richness of Tamil through tradition and technology.

Beyond the classroom, Hima is a familiar voice in the community. 

As a Tamil podcaster, radio volunteer, and Master of Ceremonies at cultural events, she uses her communication skills to celebrate Tamil art, literature, and values. Her volunteering with Tamil WynFM Vaanisai radio and the Australian Red Cross reflects her belief in service, connection, and community well-being.

As a passionate continuous learner, Hima has earned a Certification in Applied Linguistics for Tamil language from Talenta Academy (Canada), completed language methodology short courses at Monash University and RMIT, and received the Tamil Kalvi Sudaroli award from Kalvi Saalai for her dedication to Tamil education. Her journey beautifully bridges technology, education, and cultural passion inspiring many to take pride in the Tamil language and identity wherever they are in the world. 

Founded and directed by Mrs. Anitha Perumal, Natyanjali stands as a beacon for the preservation and promotion of Bharathanatyam in the Vazhuvoor tradition. With over 35 years of artistic excellence, Mrs. Anitha is a multi-award-winning performer, teacher, and examiner, recognised with honours including the Performing Artist Award for Excellence and the Indian Women in Australia Excellence Award. With unwavering dedication, she inspires young dancers and strengthens the presence of Tamil art and culture in Australia.

Natyanjali (School Of Dance) – Arts & Cultural Development Award (ORG) 

Natyanjali (School of Dance), based in west Melbourne, is dedicated to preserving and promoting South Asian performing arts, with a primary focus on Bharathanatyam in the traditional Vazhuvoor style. Under the guidance of its founder Mrs.Anitha Perumal, the school nurtures cultural appreciation and artistic excellence among the next generation.

Natyanjali (School of Dance) in west Melbourne serves as a vibrant platform for the preservation, presentation and exchange of South Asian performing arts, with a special emphasis on the classical dance form Bharathanatyam. The school upholds the rich traditions of the Vazhuvoor style, passed down through the guru–shishya parampara of the legendary Guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai.

Founded and directed by Mrs.Anitha Perumal, who received her training under the eminent Bharathanatyam exponents Paramacharya Mrs. Kamakshi Jayaraman (disciple of Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai) and Acharya Mrs. Vimala Chandrashekaran of Shivanjali (Temple of Fine Arts, Coimbatore). Natyanjali is committed to cultivating discipline, cultural identity and artistic expression in its students. Through performances, workshops and community engagements the school continues to enrich Australia’s multicultural landscape by sharing the timeless beauty and philosophy of Bharathanatyam.

Christy Nallaratnam is a multi-talented creator whose work spans literature, art, music, education, and community service. A prolific writer and illustrator, his short stories and artworks have featured in leading Tamil publications including Kalki, Kanayali, Kuvikam, and Ganam. As the resident artist for Akkinikunju (Australia), Ganam (Sri Lanka), and Kuvikam (Tamil Nadu), he has brought Tamil arts to life through his creative vision. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Tamil literature and culture, AUS Tamil TV proudly presents Christy Nallaratnam with the Arts & Cultural Development Award.

Christy Nallaratnam –  Arts & Cultural Development Award (IND)

Christy Nallaratnam is a gifted writer, artist – both digital and traditional-, lyricist, tutor, and social worker; he has consistently enriched Tamil arts and culture both in Australia and internationally.

Christy is a multi-talented creator whose contributions span literature, art, music, education, and community service. His literary journey began with Kalki, one of India’s leading Tamil publications, where in 2019 alone, he published over 30 articles. Since then, his short stories have appeared in renowned literary magazines including Kanayali, Kuvikam, Ganam, Solvanam, Kalki, Vikadan and Akkinikunju. Christy also illustrates his own stories and has provided sketches for other prominent writers. As the resident artist for Akkinikunju (Australia), Ganam (Sri Lanka), and Kuvikam (Tamil Nadu), he has designed numerous book covers and created artwork and promotional material for cultural events.

Christy has held leadership roles in the Australian Tamil Literary and Arts Society, serving as President (2023–2025) and now as Vice President. For his extensive contributions to literature, art, music, education, and community development, we are proud to present the award to Christy Nallaratnam for the Art and Cultural Development Award, proudly given by AusTamil TV.

Mr. Fazil Mohammed – Social Influencer Award

From international student to tech leader, Fazil Mohammed is inspiring change! Fazil was crowned as Victoria’s Emerging Leader – International Alumni at the 2024 Victorian International Education Awards. He’s now an established cloud engineer and is driving tech innovation while sharing his journey to current students, migrants through his social media pages.

Fazil Mohammed studied Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology and is a distinguished leader and community advocate from India. Awarded the Emerging Leader Award at Swinburne University of Technology, Fazil has excelled in both community and industry engagements. As a Project Global Citizen Scholar and Study Melbourne Student Ambassador, he embraced diverse cultural experiences and collaboration.

Upon graduating Fazil joined DuluxGroup as a Cloud Support Analyst. He’s now an established Cloud Engineer. An avid content creator, Fazil’s YouTube content promotes the life of international students in Melbourne, and has received more than one million views. He is an active alumni of Swinburne University, actively takes part in student workshops as a motivational guest speaker to make the current students employability ready. His Instagram page, Melbourne_Tamizhan focusses on the Tamil community in Australia letting the wider audience know about the events, info content and promoting local businesses. His initiatives make him a recognised figure in Victoria’s international student community.

A senior engineer and compassionate community leader, Mr. Ajithkumar Venkatesan has dedicated over a decade to humanitarian and educational initiatives across Australia, India, and Sri Lanka. As a founding member and Treasurer of the Australia Tamil Welfare Association (ATWA), he has led projects restoring lakes, supporting underprivileged students, and empowering communities through education. Mr. Ajithkumar Venkatesan  – Humanitarian Overseas Award

Mr. Ajithkumar Venkatesan is a Senior Engineer in Infrastructure and Communications Technologies with over 13 years of professional experience. Beyond his distinguished career in technology, he has demonstrated unwavering dedication to community service—particularly towards uplifting the Tamil community in Australia and contributing to meaningful humanitarian initiatives in India and Sri Lanka.

As one of the founding team members of the Australia Tamil Welfare Association (ATWA) and its current Treasurer, Mr. Venkatesan plays a pivotal role in driving the organization’s vision and impact. He oversees fundraising, technology infrastructure, and logistics for major cultural and sporting events that celebrate Tamil heritage and foster community connection. Under his leadership, ATWA has successfully extended its service initiatives beyond Australia—contributing to the restoration of several lakes in India and providing educational assistance to hundreds of underprivileged students, enabling many of them to complete their university education.

For over a decade, Mr. Venkatesan has also volunteered with the Victoria Tamil Senior Citizen Benevolent Society, where he supports programs that promote wellbeing, inclusion, and respect for elderly members of the Tamil community. His long-term commitment reflects his deep compassion and sense of social responsibility. “அறம் செய்ய விரும்பு” என்ற தமிழ் தத்துவத்தின் ஆழ்ந்த உணர்வால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்ட ஹேமா, பிறருக்கு உதவுவதை வாழ்வின் முக்கியக் குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டுள்ளார். கடந்த எட்டு ஆண்டுகளாக ஆஸ்திரேலியா தமிழர்கள் அமைப்பின் நிறுவனர் உறுப்பினராக சமூக முன்னேற்றத்திற்காக அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார். கல்வி ஆதரவு, கால்ஙாய் தூரவாருதல், பொன்ற உயரிய முயற்சிகளின் மூலம் நம் தமிழ் உறவுகளுக்கு  நம்பிக்கையும் வாய்ப்புகளும் வழங்கி, தமிழ் மக்களுடன் உறுதியான பிணைப்பை பேணியுள்ளார்.

2023 ஆம் ஆண்டில் அமைப்பின் தலைவராகப் பொறுப்பேற்று, பல்வேறு சவால்களை சமாளித்தபோதிலும் உறுதியுடன் செயல்பட்டு, 1300க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் பங்கேற்ற “மொய் விருந்து” நிகழ்வை வெற்றிகரமாக நடத்தி சிறந்த தலைமைத்திறனை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.

தமிழ் பாரம்பரியத்தின் அழகை பேணும் நோக்கில் கரகாட்டம், ஒயிலாட்டம் போன்ற நாட்டுப்புறக் கலையிலும், பெருமைமிகு ‘பறை’ இசையிலும் ஆழ்ந்த ஈடுபாட்டுடன் திகழ்கிறார்.

சமூக சேவைக்கான சிறப்பான பங்களிப்புக்காக 2025 ஆம் ஆண்டு மெல்போர்ன் முத்தமிழ் மன்றம் வழங்கிய “சமூக சேவகர் விருது” பெற்றுள்ளார். பெண்கள் முன்னேற்றத்திற்கும் சமூக மாற்றத்திற்கும் தன்னாலான அனைத்தையும் அர்ப்பணித்து, தன்னம்பிக்கை, கல்வி மற்றும் சமத்துவத்தை ஊக்குவித்து பலரின் வாழ்வில் ஒளி பரப்பும் முன்மாதிரியாக விளங்குகிறார்.

பரந்த விக்டோரியா தமிழ் சமூகத்துடனும இணைந்து பல அர்த்தமுள்ள முயற்சிகளை முன்னெடுத்து, ஒன்றுபட்டு ஒருமித்த நோக்கு கொண்ட உறவுகளை உருவாக்கியுள்ளார். இவரது அன்பும் பணிவும் சமூகத்தின் மரியாதையையும் பாசத்தையும் பெற்றுத் தந்துள்ளன.

Sisters Renuga and Kalyani Inpakumar have been powerful voices for Tamil refugees and asylum seekers through their leadership in the Tamil Refugee Council (TRC). Renuga, a law graduate and activist, uses her legal expertise to advocate for refugee justice and human rights. Kalyani, the NSW Coordinator of TRC, leads campaigns and community initiatives supporting displaced Tamils. Together, they embody courage, compassion, and commitment in their fight for equality and recognition.

Renuga Inpakumar & Kalyani Inpakumar – Refugee & Migration Support

Kalyani Inpakumar is the New South Wales Coordinator of the Tamil Refugee Council, leading campaigns that advocate for justice, permanent protection, and recognition of the Tamil genocide. Renuga Inpakumar, a Bachelor of Laws graduate currently completing her Bachelor of Arts at Western Sydney University, is the spokesperson  of the Council, combining her legal knowledge and advocacy to fight for refugee rights and accountability.

Kalyani Inpakumar serves as the New South Wales Coordinator of the Tamil Refugee Council (TRC), where she plays a leading role in organising campaigns, rallies, and community initiatives that advocate for justice, permanent protection, and recognition of the Tamil genocide. She works closely with refugee communities and human rights organisations to amplify the voices of those silenced by systemic injustice. Renuga Inpakumar, spokesperson of the TRC, is a graduate of a Bachelor of Laws and is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts at Western Sydney University. Deeply passionate about refugee rights and international justice, Renuga combines her legal background with activism to challenge Australia’s refugee policies and highlight ongoing human rights violations in Tamil Eelam. Together, Kalyani and Renuga represent a strong intergenerational commitment to advocacy, leadership, and truth within the Tamil refugee movement.

A multifaceted Melbourne-based creator, Thuvarahan Chandran, known as The Tea Kada Raja, is a writer, director, rapper, dancer, actor, and podcast host whose work celebrates Tamil cinema and culture. A law student with a deep love for the Tamil language, he has produced independent music videos, short films, and collaborations with major events like the Indian Film Festival. Through his creativity and passion, Thuvarahan continues to spotlight Melbourne’s Tamil talent on the global stage and inspire the next generation to stay connected to their roots.

Mr. Thuvarahan Chandran  – Youth Cultural Excellence Award

Thuvarahan Chandran, known as The Tea Kada Raja, is a Melbourne-based creator, law student, and storyteller passionate about Tamil culture. Through The Tea Kada Raja Show, he shares his love for Tamil movies, music, and language, creating Melbourne’s first Tamil independent music video and directing his own short film. His vision is to showcase Melbourne’s Tamil talent on the global stage and inspire future generations to stay connected to their roots.

Thuvarahan Chandran, better known as The Tea Kada Raja, is a Melbourne based creator who is a content creator, podcast host, writer, director, rapper, dancer, and actor. A law student born and raised in Melbourne, Thuvarahan started The Tea Kada Raja Show on Instagram and TikTok to share and celebrate Tamil movies and culture with a wider audience.

His love for the Tamil language has been a big part of his life since childhood, and it continues to inspire everything he does. This year, he created Melbourne’s first Tamil independent music video and he performed alongside Vaaheesan, Amos Paul, and Santesh. He’s also written, performed, and released three songs and music videos, and recently directed his first short film.

He’s also had the chance to collaborate with the Indian Film Festival and helped promote concerts for artists like Yuvan and Deva, moments he describes as both surreal and deeply meaningful. When he’s not creating, Thuvarahan enjoys vlogging, acting, MCing at events, playing the miruthangam, reading, and spending time with his family and dog. 

Thuvarahan’s vision is to bring Melbourne’s Tamil talent to the global stage, to see it celebrated on the same level as the thriving Tamil communities in the UK, Canada, and across Europe. Beyond that, his dream is to pass down his love and respect for the Tamil language, culture, and cinema to future generations, keeping their connection to their roots alive and strong.
